Making Your Own Baby Wipes Solution
How to make your own wash solution for cloth baby wipes.
Easily nourish and cleanse your baby's bottom without harsh chemicals.
Making your own solution for cloth baby wipes doesn't have to be complicated. As a mom of twins, I chose to cloth diaper them to save on expenses. I went full fledged into cloth and made my own cloth wipes and own wash solution.
Using cloth wipes and a natural wash solution keeps harsh chemicals away from your baby's bum’s sensitive skin, while also reducing waste. Did you know many baby wipes contain preservative ingredients that release formaldehyde? Formaldehyde is recognized as a carcinogen to humans and is also associated with allergic contact dermatitis. Something you definitely want to keep way from your baby's sensitive skin!
The Wipe
When I had my twins, people loved giving those cute receiving blankets. I had an abundance of them but no real use! I cut the blankets into 7x5 rectangles. These folded nicely in half to fit in a wipes container. My mom helped me out by sewing a zigzag stitch along the edges to keep from fraying and unraveling, but you can get by without if you don't have the means -they will still be usable for quite some time even without the edge stitching. There are also many companies selling cloth wipes, I even have some listed on Levenji's shop, but cutting up those receiving blankets you received at your baby shower is an incredible way to minimize your costs!
The Wash Solution
I love essential oils and include them wherever I can! Essential oils are GREAT for using in a wash solution for baby wipes. They are cloth diaper safe, so you can wash your wipes with your diapers if you are cloth diapering as well. Many many essential oils are antibacterial, antimicrobial, and/or antiseptic making them perfect for cleansing your baby's bum. My favorite essential oils to use for a cloth wipe wash solution are Tea Tree Oil, Frankincense, and Rosewood Oil. I love to pair these with a nice scent. I have a few concentrated blends that I make listed on my shop! The concentrate blends I make have essential oils, Vitamin E oil, and a nourishing carrier oil.
The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database gives formaldehyde the highest 1 to 10 score for a negative impact on health. -Irina Webb, trusted non-toxic consumer product researcher
The easiest way to mix up a wash solution is to use a Leveji's concentrated blend with 16 oz of water and a few squirts of your trusted baby wash. Mason jars are really great for mixing it all. Pour in the water, count out drops of the concentrate, squirt in the baby wash, screw the lid on, give the jar a few shakes, then pour over your dry wipes in a wipes container. If your stack of dry wipes is thick, flip the stack over and pour a little more to get all the wipes nice and moist.

Savings
Ask any parent of a newborn and they will tell you, diapering is the biggest expense! It doesn't have to be expensive though! Cost cutting strategies can help stretch your budget. At 19 weeks along when I learned I was carrying twins, I immediately started thinking of ways I could cut costs and knew that I had to cut out disposable diapers, throw away wipes, and formula. I was 1,000% DETERMINED! It was very daunting to think about, but I knew it was the only way for our family to make it. Newborns go anywhere from 14 to 10 diapers a day! As your baby gets older, you still have 7-10 diaper changes per day. Many times, a diaper change will require 2-3 wipes (or more!), so you can generate significant savings by using cloth wipes. Some sites estimate wipes usage in the first year to be 8,000 or even 15,000! My two 5-pack receiving blankets lasted me and my boys through potty training. Though I stopped using them when I stopped washing diapers after they were officially finished, with the cost of toilet paper nowadays, every now and then I think about going back to cloth wipes!
